Rwenzori & Elgon Moutain Hiking

Mountaineering and Hiking.­­­­

In Uganda, there are two distinctive regions well known for mountain climbing and hiking. These are the Rwenzori Mountains which were referred to as “Mountains of the Moon” by Henry Morton Stanley, a British explorer and Mountain Elgon which is found in Eastern Uganda, bordering Kenya to the east.

One can also take a trip and trek in the volcanic range of the Virungas in the Mgahinga National Park. There are also shorter, easier hikes for example, from the base of the splendid Murchison Falls to the top is ideal for people who prefer short hikes.

Mountaineering in the Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park – a World Heritage Centre – offers mountaineers an fabulous and breathe taking experience for a life time. Peaks include:

  • Margherita (5109m ASL)
  • Alexandria (5091m)
  • Albert on Mt Stanley (5087m)
  • Mt Baker (4843m)
  • Speak (4889m)
  • Gessi (4797m)
  • Emeni (4791m)
  • Luig di savioa (4626m) and
  • Weisemann (4620m)

Rwenzori Mountaineering Services handles all tourism activities in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. It also offers accommodation facilities at various mountain camps, experienced local guides, chefs and porters and specialised equipment.

The opportune times to go mountaineering are either December to February, or June to August.

The park is rich in biodiversity of flora and fauna and is located close to Queen Elizabeth national park in case you wish to add a wildlife safari to the end of your mountaineering holiday.

There are also community tourism activities  available at the base camp of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Mt. Elgon

Mount Elgon is a volcanic mountain which at 4,321mASL is the 4th highest mountain in East Africa.  It is located within the Mount Elgon National Park. The park boundaries contain 1147 Sq. km of mountain. Most of this area is covered with typical afro-montane vegetation, complete with giant groundsels and bamboo forest.

Mt. Elgon is an excellent choice for more strenuous climbs in the region. It has many of the same attractions, with milder climate and lower elevation. When climbing the peaks, you do not require any special equipment or climbing experience. You can get to the summit of the mountain in just three days. A slightly longer visit will permit a more thorough exploration of all Mt. Elgon has to offer.

The ideal time for mountaineering in this part of the country is between December to March while June to October is the wettest.
