The mountain range is a branch of the Albertine Rift Mountains, which border the western branch of the East African Rift. They are located between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu. The name “Virunga” is an English version of the Kinyarwanda word ibirunga, which means “volcanoes”. During your Uganda safari in western Uganda, get a chance to hike to the Virunga volcano ranges.

Walk from Buhoma in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to the beautiful Kisoro town, in the shadow of the Virunga Volcanoes, through the local villages and across Lake Mutanda. This walk can take 1-2 days depending on your pace and the trails selected. Enjoy spectacular views, amazing wildlife and fascinating commentary from your guides, including information about the local medicinal plants.

There are optional additional day treks including into the Virungas,

  • Mt. Sabinyo (3600m)
  • Mt. Gahinga (3400m) 6 hours
  • Mt. Muhavura (1200m) 7 hours
